Sonya

We had just about given up hope of ever getting a rescue Dogue De Bordeaux who was still a puppy. Our dog Xena was 5 1/2 at the time luck shined down on us. Xena isn't very accepting of adult dogs so we applied with the Rescue and I specified a young dog. A while had gone by and I never expected the phone call we received from George. George had a female puppy about 4 1/2 months old who needed a home. She was an impulse purchase and her owner had no time or inclination to properly care for her. She was crated all day while he was off to work in Manhattan for 12 hours a day. Her only human contact was a woman who came by once a day to water and feed her and take her out of her crate for a short time. Luckily for Sonya and us, the woman persuaded the owner to turn her over to the rescue. George asked me if I wanted to come to New Jersey and pick her up. It was entirely up to Xena. If she accepted her, she would come home with us. Well, it was love at first sniff. They liked each other on first sight and have been inseparable since. We named her Sonya. She was in good health, but pretty thin. She has flourished. She has been spayed, gained weight, grew and has a wonderful disposition. Xena is still "Alpha" and Sonya accepts her place in the home. We also have an old terrier and Sonya livened him up too. Sonya & Xena sleep together on the sofa, play with tennis balls, wrestle and roll around. Xena took on the mother role and Sonya loves being her adopted daughter. We are thankful to the rescue for bringing such joy into our home. Thank you, Elissa and Michael Maldonado.
